Identity Theft

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  This may be a time tested phrase, but truly, wouldn't you rather take a few steps now to protect yourself from the nightmare of identity theft?  We provide this information in hopes that you can protect yourself against this rapidly growing crime.

  1. Make a copy, front and back, of everything in your wallet.  It can be hard to contact the credit card company when you no longer have the card.
  2. When paying bills, do not write your complete account number on any check you write.  Use the last four numbers.
  3. Try not to use your home phone and address on checks.  Instead, use a P.O. Box and work phone.
  4. If your wallet, personal identification, or credit cards have been stolen call the three nationwide Consumer Reporting Companies immediately to place a fraud alert on your name:

 Equifax: 800-525-6285

 Experian (formerly TRW): 888-397-3742

 Trans Union: 800-680-7289

If you suspect your Social Security Number has been obtained illegally, contact the Social Security Administration fraud line at 800-269-0271 or submit a complaint at the Social Security website.
