Protect Against Identity Theft
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This may be a time tested phrase, but truly, wouldn't you rather take a few steps now to protect yourself from the nightmare of identity theft? We provide this information in hopes that you can protect yourself against this rapidly growing crime.
- Make a copy, front and back, of everything in your wallet. It can be hard to contact the credit card company when you no longer have the card.
- When paying bills, do not write your complete account number on any check you write. Use the last four numbers.
- Try not to use your home phone and address on checks. Instead, use a P.O. Box and work phone.
- If your wallet, personal identification, or credit cards have been stolen call the three nationwide Consumer Reporting Companies immediately to place a fraud alert on your name:
- Equifax: 800-525-6285
- Experian (formerly TRW): 888-397-3742
- Trans Union: 800-680-7289
If you suspect your Social Security Number has been obtained illegally, contact the Social Security Administration fraud line at 800-269-0271 or submit a complaint at the Social Security website.
